Data can be copied about 20 times with a general 128MB Memory Stick using an alkali dry battery made by Sony. The specifications and appearance of the memory card reader are subject to change without notice. Precautions On handling • Do not place the memory card reader in the following places: — An extremely hot place (over +60°C (+140°F)) — A place exposed to direct sunlight or near a heater — In a damp place such as a bathroom — In a car with the windows rolled up (especially in the summer) — In a dusty place — Near a source of electromagnetic fields such as a magnet, speaker, or TV • Do not drop or bump the memory card reader. This may cause the memory card reader to malfunction. • Prevent dust, garbage, etc. going into slots. On cleaning After wiping the memory card reader casing with a soft cloth slightly moistened with water, wipe it again with a dry cloth. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzene as this may mar the finish on the casing. If you have any questions or problems concerning your memory card reader, please consult your nearest Sony dealer. Parts and controls (See Fig. A) 1 Port dedicated to the Hi-MD Walkman 2 CHECK button 3 COPY button 4 Access lamp 5 Compact flash slot 6 5-in-1 slot 7 Battery compartment lid 8 Memory card protector About the memory card protector The memory card protector is factory-installed in the compact flash slot. • Remove it when using the compact flash slot. • Insert the protector into the compact flash slot for protection of the memory card when using the 5-in-1 slot. Inserting alkaline dry batteries (See Fig. B-1) 1 Slide OPEN to open the battery compartment. 2 Insert four size-AAA alkaline dry batteries (not supplied) with the 3 and # poles positioned correctly. 3 Close the battery compartment lid. When to change the batteries When the batteries become weak, the access lamp quickly flashes in red (at intervals of about 0.25 seconds). Replace all four batteries with new ones. Notes • Do not use the manganese dry batteries. • The battery life may be shorter due to the temperature of the location operating condition, or the type of alkaline dry battery being used. • Use new dry batteries when copying larger data than 512MB. When the battery compartment lid comes off The battery compartment lid is so designed that it comes off if an excessive force is applied when it is opened. If the battery compartment lid comes off, install it as shown in B-2. Copying data from a memory card to a disc in Hi-MD mode* (See Fig. C) *A disc in Hi-MD mode is 1GB Hi-MD disc, or 60/74/80- minute standard disc in Hi-MD mode. 1 Prepare the Hi-MD Walkman. Insert a battery or connect AC power adaptor. Insert a disc in Hi-MD mode with a sufficient free space. 2 Connect the memory card reader to the Hi-MD Walkman. Use the USB cable supplied with the Hi-MD Walkman (1). 3 Insert a memory card in the slot. (See Fig. D) Be sure to insert a memory card as follows. With the terminal side of the memory card towards the slot, insert the memory card into the slot until it stops. 5-in-1 slot Insert a memory card with the front side upward. • Memory Stick • Memory Stick PRO • Memory Stick Duo (Use the adapter.) • Memory Stick PRO Duo (Use the adapter.) • SD Memory Card • miniSD Card (Use the adapter.) • xD-Picture Card • SmartMedia • MultimediaCard When the memory card reaches the end of the slot, the memory card will be positioned inside the protruding part of the protector.(See Fig. D-1) Compact flash slot Insert a memory card with the front side downward. • Compact Flash 4 Press the COPY button. The memory card reader is turned on to start copying (the access lamp flashes in green). The access lamp light up in green when a copy is completed normally. A power is automatically turned off after about 10 seconds of the completion of a copy. The “MCMDxxx” folder is automatically created on the disc, and whole data stored in a memory card are copied into the “MCMDxxx” folder as they are. You can create up to 510 folders. 5 Press CHECK button to check the result after turned off. When a copying is completed normally, the access lamp lights up in green. If the lamp light up in red, copy again (see “About the access lamp”). About the access lamp The access lamp indicates the operating status of the memory card reader and the exhaustion status of batteries. Access lamp Status Data is being copied. Verifying the result. Copying finished normally. Batteries have been exhausted. The free space on the disc in the Hi-MD Walkman is insufficient. Error To remove the memory card Hold the memory card and pull it out after the access lamp is turned off. To disconnect the USB cable Disconnect the USB cable after the access lamp is turned off.
