IEEE 1394 (FireWire) English Securing the Notebook Your new Notebook will make software and hardware solutions to unauthorized access available to you. Fingerprint Sensor (optional) Your new notebook is equipped with a fingerprint sensor. Benefits of this technology First of all, it provides extra comfort. You will not have to memorize passwords, because the software manages those for you. The program remembers and saves all input that is necessary for authentication purposes. By your fingerprint the program recognizes that you are authorized to retrieve and transmit the login data. Attention! Store your passwords and access data in a safe place. If you cannot identify yourself by your fingerprint (e.g., when working on someone else's computer), you can log in with your access data in the usual way. Configuration of the software: 1. To configure the software, click on the Start button. The Omnipass wizard is launched and takes you through the configuration process: 63 Securing the Notebook 2. The next window shows the user name you entered during registration. If you have a password, enter it here. We recommend that you discontinue this process if you do not have a password yet. Continue only once you have set up a password in system control under user accounts. The option to restore a user from a backed-up user profile is not relevant to the first-time setup, but only once the notebook has been set to delivery state and you want to use the profile originally created. 3. If you have a password, continue with the setup. Follow further instructions on your screen. Additional functions 1. Open the Omnipass Control Center .. Change Your System Settings .. Enable or disable pre-boot authentication. 2. Check „Enable System Boot Authentication“ and remove for added security the option „Enable Single Touch Boot feature“. 3. Click on Next and assign a password. Confirm it and click Next. After the system reboot, either your fingerprint or the recently created password is queried before the operating system can be launched. Fast user switching 1. If you have created two or more user accounts, the respective users can log on using their fingerprints. 2. Open the Omnipass Control Center • Change Your System Settings • Modify Windows Fast User Switching option • Enable Windows Fast User Switching and save all changes. Securing the Notebook 3. To do this, simply move your finger over the sensor. The „ Fast User Switching Desktop“interface comes up. With one or even several users already using the notebook, to register a new user, simply move your finger over the sensor. English Note Changes to system settings require administrator rights. File Encryption You will in addition have the possibility of setting up an additional access block for all files and directories on your Notebook, for additional protection against external access to your Notebook. During this, the files are converted into a format that cannot be read by unauthorized users (encryption). It will only be possible to unblock or decrypt the files with your main password or with a given security device after the encryption. The encrypted files will have the ‘opf’ ending. The encrypted directories will take over the name of the original directory, but will end with ‘opx’. Attention The sensor and finger should be clean of any foreign material when used. 1. Click on the file or the directory for which you would like to prevent unauthorized access with the right mouse button, to encrypt a file or a directory. 2. Click on OmniPass – Encrypt File(s) in the Context menu. OmniPass will then request you to authenticate yourself. 3. Click on OK when the encryption has been concluded. File Decryption 1. Click on the file or the directory for which you would like to recreate normal access with the right mouse button, to decrypt a file or a directory. 2. Click on OmniPass – Decrypt File(s) or on Open in the Context menu. 3. Both actions will lead to the circumstance that OmniPass will invite you to authenticate yourself. The file will remain decrypted until you encrypt them again, after the decryption. A renewed encryption will not take place automatically. 65 Securing the Notebook Startup Password You can protect your notebook against unauthorized use with a switching on password. Then, an invitation to enter the password will appear on the screen when the notebook is switched on. The password will be set up in BIOS. Warning! Keep your password in a safe place. You will not have any possibility of deleting your password if you forget it. Contact your Customer Service in that case. You can also use the security options of Windows Vista®, in order to protect your data against unauthorized access. You will find further information in the chapter “Data and System Security” starting on page 78. Using a safety lock You can prevent theft by using a so called Kensington lock, which can be bought at your local retailer. The cable wraps around an object and the “T” shaped end in...
