Label the backup copies clearly and store them in a safe place. It is easy to put off backing up because it takes time. However, if your internal storage drive suddenly fails, you will lose all the data on it unless you have a separate backup copy. For more information, see “Data and system configuration backup in the Windows® operating system” on page 169. . Use Error-checking and Disk Defragmenter regularly to check and optimize disk space and improve performance. . Scan all new files for viruses. This precaution is especially important for files you receive via external media, email, or download from the Internet. . Take frequent breaks to avoid repetitive-motion injuries and eyestrain. . Do not turn off the computer if a drive indicator light indicates a drive is active. Turning off the computer while it is reading from or writing to a disk may damage the disk, the drive, or both. NOTE The Windows® operating system records information, such as your desktop setup, during its shutdown procedure. If you do not let the Windows® operating system shut down normally, details such as new icon positions may be lost. Using the keyboard Your computer’s keyboard contains character keys, control keys, function keys, and special Windows® keys. (Sample Illustration) Keyboard 82 82 82 Using the keyboard Character keys Typing with the character keys is very much like typing on a typewriter, except that: . The space bar creates a space character instead of just passing over an area of the page. . The lowercase letter l (el) and the number 1 are not interchangeable. . The uppercase letter O and the number 0 are not interchangeable. Ctrl, Fn, and Alt keys (Sample Illustration) Ctrl, Fn, and Alt keys The Ctrl, Fn, and Alt keys do different things depending on the program you are using. For more information, see your program documentation. Function keys The function keys (not to be confused with the Fn key) are the 12 keys at the top of the keyboard. (Sample Illustration) Function keys F1 through F12 are called function keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed. Used in combination with the Fn key, function keys marked with icons execute specific functions on the computer. For example, Fn + F9 turns the touch pad ON/OFF. Special Windows® keys Application key Windows® key (Sample Illustration) Special Windows® keys Your computer’s keyboard has one key and one button that have special functions in Windows®: . Windows® key—Opens the Start menu . Application key—Has a similar function as the secondary mouse button Learning the Basics Learning the Basics Starting a program Starting a program The easiest way to start a program is to double-click the name of the file that contains the information you want to work on. To find the file, use the Start menu or Windows® Explorer. If you prefer to open the program first, you have four options. You can: . Use the Search programs and files field in the Start menu . Double-click the icon for the program on your desktop . Use the Start menu . The next two sections explain how to start a program from the Start menu and the Search programs and files field. Starting a program using the Search programs and files field This example uses the Start menu’s Search programs and files field to start WordPad: 1 Click Start to display the Start menu. The Search programs and files field appears at the bottom of the Start menu. As you type, all matching files and programs are displayed in a separate window. 3 In the search results window, click WordPad under Programs. 84 84 84 Saving your work Starting a program from the Start menu When you install a program, the operating system usually puts an icon in the All Programs menu. To start a program that has an icon in the All Programs menu, follow these steps, which use the Windows® WordPad program as an example: 1 Click Start, and then All Programs. The Windows® operating system displays the All Programs menu, which lists programs and program groups. If your program is listed, go to step 3, otherwise, continue with step 2. NOTE If you pause with your mouse on All Programs, it will open it up. You may need to scroll up or down to see the complete list. 2 Click the program group, in this example, Accessories. The Accessories menu is displayed. 3 Click the program, in this example, WordPad. WordPad opens. To close the program, click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the program’s window. Saving your work Before you turn off the computer using the Shut down command, save your work on the internal storage drive, external media, flash media, or optical disc.
