To open the program or document, press Fn plus ® the appropriate key from within any Windows program. Using the keyboard or pointing device to assign keys To assign a key to open a program or document, start Fn-esse and either: . Using the keyboard, press and hold the Fn key, then press the desired assignment key. . Using the pointing device, move the cursor over the desired key in the Fn-esse window and press the secondary button. The Assignment Type dialog box appears. Sample Fn-esse assignment type dialog box Toshiba Utilities Fn-esse 185 Making a direct key assignment 1 Select Direct... to display the Add/Edit Command dialog box. 2 Enter the Description, Command Line and Working Directory for the new Fn-esse key assignment, or click the Browse button to specify this information. 3 Click OK. Making a popup assignment 1 Select Popup... to display the Application Explorer dialog box. 2 Select the desired folder. The left side of the Application Explorer window displays the folders in the Programs menu. The right side lists the programs and documents in the folder. These are the items that will appear in the popup list. 3 To create a popup list with items from various folders, or to pick only a few items from a folder, create a new folder containing only the desired programs and documents. If you are unsure how to do this, refer to your Windows® XP Professional operating system documentation. 4 Click OK to associate the folder with the key you just selected. To open a popup list showing the items in that folder, press Fn plus the appropriate key from within any Windows® program. Viewing existing key assignments To view the existing key assignments, choose Assignments from the Fn-esse keyboard. Fn-esse displays the Function Key Assignments dialog box. This box lists all the key assignments and the program or document to which each key is assigned. Toshiba Utilities Hotkey utility 186 To view items in a popup list, click the Expand popup lists check box. Changing or removing existing key assignments In the Fn-esse keyboard, click the key you wish to change with the secondary button. Fn-esse displays the Assignment Type dialog box. . To change the key assignment, click Direct... or Popup... and continue as if you were creating a new assignment. . To remove the key assignment, click Clear. Hotkey utility The hotkey utility allows you to receive a confirmation message when you use the hotkey combination for Standby [Fn+F3] and Hibernation [Fn+F4]. To activate: 1 Click Start, Toshiba Utilities, then click the Hotkey utility. Toshiba Utilities Toshiba Console 187 2 The Hotkey window appears. Toshiba Console The Toshiba Console provides quick access to computer functions and allows you to customize a range of computer settings. To access the control panel: 1 Click Start, then click All Programs. 2 Point to Toshiba Console, then click the resulting Toshiba Console selection. The Toshiba Console window appears. User password Power Management The Power Management feature enables you to control your computer’s power usage, regardless of the source, and use the many preset power modes, or create one yourself. To access Power Management through the Toshiba Console, double-click the Power Management icon. The Toshiba Power Saver Properties window appears. Toshiba Utilities Toshiba Console 190 Sample Toshiba Power Saver Properties window The Power Save Modes tab shows the power usage modes for both AC power (“Plugged in”) and battery power (Running on batteries”). You can either use one of the preset modes or create and use your own customized mode. The preset modes cannot be deleted. By changing the options that appear in the Toshiba Power Saver Properties window and clicking OK, you can reconfigure that function. Any options that you change become effective when you click either OK or Apply. Plugged in section This section has a single preset power usage mode — Full Power. You can create other AC power modes, but Toshiba recommends use of the preset Full Power mode.
