Domain Group Configuration

Ensure that the number of Fibre Channel Fabrics configured in the Virtual Connect domain is equal.

For each network uplink, verify that the network name, state, smart link, network port location, speed/duplex mode, and
connection mode are identical.

Ensure that the number of networks configured in the Virtual Connect Domain is equal.

For each tagged VLAN, verify that the network name, VLAN ID, Native, and Smart Link are the same.

Ensure that the number of tagged VLANs is equal among all the domains.

For network and Fibre Channel SNMP settings, verify that the community strings are the same to ensure proper discovery.

Manager (VCEM)

ProLiant management tip of the month
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should…
With the incredible popularity of virtualization, many organizations are making ill-informed decisions to virtualize anything and
everything. While the goal is admirable, the practicality can be lacking in some cases.
First, before we go any further, let us answer this question: Can HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) be run in a virtual
machine (VM)? In short, yes. In fact, even the QuickSpecs call it out: www.hp.com/go/hpsim --> QuickSpecs. Note that this is
very specific—VMware ESX Server 3.x. There is a reason for this.
By its very nature, HP SIM is extremely I/O intensive. Everything it knows, it learns through the network. That means that the
process of “learning” (discovery, identification, status polling, database collection) utilizes the network connection extensively.
Additionally, everything it learns is placed in a database. This can mean that data transfer is extremely high. This leads to an
important point:
<< HP SIM is more resource intensive than it is processor intensive. >>
This becomes important because compared to other virtualization solutions, VMware ESX 3.x is more efficient (that is, it has less
overhead) when it comes to input/output. This includes VMware GSX, VMware Server and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005
(evaluations have not been done with various distributions of Xen, yet, nor with the un-released Microsoft Hyper-V).
There are two basic things that need to be considered when choosing to virtualize an instance of HP SIM: Can you provision a
VM with adequate resources and can you live without the Service Essentials Remote Support Pack?
The first question is relatively easy to answer, and the best place to begin is the HP SIM Sizing utility available from
www.hp.com/go/hpsim --> Technical Support. Here you are able to input how many devices you are expecting to manage, the
types of devices (servers versus storage), the operating system and database, which Essentials you expect to host, and
information about data retention. It will output a specific configuration for you, but there are also some pre-packaged reference
configurations (Table 3-1).
