Technical Note
Using dbreorg.pl prior to upgrading to
HP Output Server, Version 3.4.1

This technical note updates the steps to perform if one of the following conditions occurs after running
dbreorg.pl on an HP Output Server 3.3 delivery server on a UNIX host:

dbreorg.pl fails

the delivery server fails to start
HP Output Server 3.4.1 replaces its proprietary database from previous HP Output Server versions with MySQL for
HP Output Management. During an upgrade, the setup program runs a data migration utility to migrate data from the
HP Output Server 3.3 AIM, CM, DLM, EM, JQM, and PM databases to the MySQL database. In the Installation and
Configuration Guide
for HP Output Server 3.4.1, HP recommends that system administrators run the dbreorg.pl
script on these servers in their HP Output Server 3.3 installation prior to performing an upgrade. The Installation and
Configuration Guide
instructs system administrators to contact Customer Support if they have not previously used
dbreorg.pl successfully.
The dbreorg.pl script reorganizes databases in HP Output Server 3.3. The script is located in
installDir/unsupported/tools in an HP Output Server 3.3 installation, where installDir is the path where HP
Output Server is installed. Instructions for using dbreorg.pl are located in “Chapter 3” and “Appendix A” of the
Maintaining and Troubleshooting Guide for HP Output Server, Version 3.2. More information about using
dbreorg.pl is also located in an HP Output Server 3.3 installation at
installDir/unsupported/tools/dbreorg.txt.
The instructions in “Appendix A” of the Maintaining and Troubleshooting Guide are specific to reorganizing a
delivery server database and include instructions for renaming and recreating a new database directory and files for
the server (by restarting the server) if the database reorganization does not complete successfully. The instructions for
renaming and restarting the server on a UNIX host are not clear and can result in the user deleting the new database
while the server is running. The purpose of this technical note is to provide updated instructions for renaming and
restarting the server on a UNIX host.
In the section “Reorganizing a Database (UNIX) in Appendix A” of the Maintaining and Troubleshooting Guide for
HP Output Server, Version 3.2, replace steps 4a through 4f with the following instructions:
If the dbreorg.pl script fails or if the server does not start, delete the old database and create a new one.
NOTE: When you delete a JQM database, users (or applications) must resubmit all jobs that are
pending in the queue. When you delete a DSM database, users (or applications) must resubmit all
jobs that are in the processing state.
