Washable dust bag 11. Hole punch 8 10 2 3 11 1 9 7 6 4 5 Unpacking Due to modern mass production techniques, it is unlikely that your GMC Power Tool is faulty or that a part is missing. If you find anything wrong, do not operate the tool until the parts have been replaced or the fault has been rectified. Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury. Switching on and off 1. With the cordset fitted to a power outlet, switch the sander on by pressing the “I” mark on the protective cover of the on/off switch (3). 2. To turn off the sander, press the “0” mark on the protective cover of the on/ off switch (3). NOTE. It takes a few operations to get used to switching the sander on and off due to the protective cover. However, it is well worth the effort due to the protection afforded to the switch and the consequent increased lifetime of the unit. Using the sander 1. The sander can be used for most sanding operations on materials such as wood, plastic, metal and painted surfaces. 2. Wear safety goggles, dust mask and ear muffs. 3. Switch the sander on whilstit is resting on the workpiece. Take care to hold the whole surface of the platen on the workpiece. 4. Move the sander over the surface of the work in a circular motion with an even, moderate pressure. CAUTION. Where possible, clamp smaller workpieces to the bench. NOTE. If there are still scratches on your work after sanding, try either of the following: 1. Go back to a coarser grit and sand the marks out before recommencing with the original grit. 2. Try using new sandpaper of the same grit to eliminate the unwanted marks before progressing to a finer grit and finishing the job. Selecting the right grade of sandpaper Different grades of sanding paper can be purchased from your local hardware store. Available grades are: Coarse, Medium and Fine. Use a coarse grit to sand down rough finishes, medium grit to smooth the work and fine grit to finish off. It is best to make a trial run on a scrap piece of material to determine the optimum grades of sandpaper for a particular job. Fitting a sanding sheet WARNING. Always ensure that the tool is switched off and the plug is removed from the power point before making any adjustments or maintenance procedures. 1. Before fitting sandpaper, remove any dust or debris from the hooks and loops of the base. GRIT CHART GRIT TYPE 60 or less Very Coarse 80 – 100 Coarse 120 – 150 Medium 180 – 220 Fine 240 or more Very Fine 2. When fitting Hook & Loop sandpaper match the holes in a suitable sheet with the holes in the base. 3. Simply press the sheet to the base to attach it. 4. To remove the sheet, peel it away from the base. CAUTION. Take care to regularly clean out the build up of dust on the base underneath the sandpaper and not to let the sandpaper wear completely down before replacing it. Failure to observe these two precautionary measures can lead to damage to the hooks and loops on the platen and the sandpaper will not attach properly. 5. Ordinary (non Hook & Loop type) sanding sheets can also be used. 6. Release the paper clamp (5) from both sides of the sander. 7. Insert the end of the sandpaper under one clamp and pull the paper tight over the base (4) ensuring the holes align with those in the base and then clamp the other side. 8. The paper should be kept tightly clamped over the base, otherwise there could be excessive wear of the base material. WARNING. Never use the sander unless the entire base is fitted with sandpaper or another type of pad. Using the hole punch 1. If the sandpaper installed does not have holes it will be necessary to punch holes into the sandpaper using the hole punch (11) provided. 2. Place the hole punch on a level surface. 3. After fitting the sandpaper to the sander align the base of the sander with the hole punch and push down on the sander until the hole punch pierces the sandpaper. 4. Remove the sander from the hole punch. Dust extraction canister WARNING. Always ensure that the tool is switched off and the plug is removed from the power point before making any adjustments or maintenance procedures. 1. Attach the dust extraction canister (9) to the sander by pushing and twisting the bayonet fitting in a similar action to inserting a light globe into a lamp. WARNING. For optimum dust extraction, remove and empty the canister (10) when it is no more than half full. Do not use the canister when sanding metal. The hot metal particles could cause residual wood dust or the internal bag itself to catch fire. 2. Remove the cap from the end of the canister (9) to access the internal bag (10) when you wish to replace or clean the bag. The bag can be washed. Make sure the bag is completely dry before replacing it. Dust extraction adapter The SA146 features a dust extraction port (7) and dust extraction adapter (8) for easy connection to a dust extraction unit. 1. Connect the dust extraction adapter to the dust extraction port at the back of the sander. 2. Attach a dust extraction unit (no...
