At the same time, turn the cuff so the air hoses run along the inside of the arm (see illustration). o The hoses should be parallel to your arm and point towards your hand. o Do not overtighten the cuff – you should be able to fit one finger between the cuff and your arm. • Fold the end of the cuff over the metal bracket, wrap the end down around your arm and press it onto the Velcro tab (4). • NB: o The cuff should be taut but should not pinch. o The air hoses should run along the inside of your arm. o The lower edge of the cuff should be 1-2 cm from your elbow joint. o It is best to place the cuff directly against the skin. o If you want to take a number of readings, place the cuff on the same arm each time. It is also important to also always measure at the same time of day, under the same conditions and in the same position. Measuring the blood pressure • You can take the reading in one of two positions: o Lie down on your back with your arm resting along your side and the palm facing upwards. o Sit on a chair and place your arm on the table with your palm facing upwards. Stay completely still while taking the reading. • Push the On/Off button (8). The appliance beeps and all symbols and numbers are shown on the display for approx. 2 seconds. • When the display shows “0 mmHg” under both systolic pressure (a) and diastolic pressure (b) and the symbol for new reading (d) flashes, the appliance is ready for use. o If air was left in the cuff from last use, the symbol for emptying the cuff (f) flashes. Press the release valve (9) on the hose in front of the rubber bulb (5) to empty all air out of the cuff. When the symbol for new measurement flashes, the appliance is ready for use. • Inflate the cuff to 30 mmHg above the expected (diastolic) blood pressure by squeezing the rubber bulb a number of times in quick succession. For guidelines about blood pressure values, see the table in “When is my blood pressure too high or too low?” It is important to inflate the cuff in one continuous process without pauses. Let go of the rubber bulb once the desired value has been reached. o If an error occurs during inflation of the cuff, the display shows “EE RETEST”. Empty all air out of the cuff by pressing the release valve. Inflate the cuff again when the symbol for new measurement flashes. • The blood pressure measurement begins shortly after the rubber bulb is released. o The display shows “TESTING” and the appliance displays the pressure continuously during the measurement. o The symbol for pulse measurement (e) flashes as an indication that the pulse is also being measured. • When the blood pressure measurement is complete, the appliance beeps three times. o The display shows the systolic pressure, the diastolic pressure and the pulse (c). o The symbol for emptying of cuff flashes. • Press the release valve to empty all air out of the cuff. When all air has been removed from the cuff, the symbol for new measurement flashes. • If you need to take several readings, you should wait 5-10 minutes between each reading. o Caution! A single reading will not give a sure indication of your condition. You can only get an idea of this after a number of readings. • Switch off the appliance by pressing the On/Off button when you have finished the measurement. o The appliance automatically switches off after two minutes of inaction. STORAGE Store the appliance in the accompanying storage pouch (12) when not in use. • Store in a dry, cool place. • Do not place heavy objects on top of the appliance. • Remove the batteries if the appliance is not to be used for a prolonged period. • Do not stretch, twist or bend the air hoses or the cuff. CLEANING When cleaning the appliance, you should pay attention to the following points: • Do not submerge the appliance in water, and do not let water enter the appliance. • Clean the appliance and the cuff by wiping them with a damp cloth. A little detergent can be added to the water if the appliance and the cuff are heavily soiled. • Do not use a scouring pad, steel wool or any form of strong solvents or abrasive cleaning agents to clean the appliance, as they may damage the outside surfaces of the appliance. TROUBLESHOOTING Error Cause Solution The display shows “RETEST” The pressure only rises slowly during inflation. The display shows the battery symbol or the display is blank. Unusual readings 1. Take a new reading and make sure the cuff is inflated to 30 mmHg above the expected blood pressure. 2. The user must remain completely still and not move the arm or the appliance during measurement. 3. Check for leakage in the circuit. Fit the hose correctly. Replace the batteries. Check that the batteries are fitted the right way round. 1. Tighten the cuff and position it as described in the section “Fitting the cuff on the arm”. 2. The user must remain still and avoid speaking during measurement. 3. The user must try to relax and take 2-3 deep breaths. 4. The user must lie down or sit as described...
