This perpetual agitation causes them to impact the fibers and stick. Tests conducted in the 1960's found that HEPA filters could be 99.9999% efficient for bacteria and 99.999% efficient for viruses. The fit of the filters in the filter chamber has a major influence on performance. Poor fit seriously degrades efficiency by allowing unfiltered air to by-pass the filter. Cracks in the folds of the filter will similarly affect filtration results.
