In this release, Secure Boot is available on systems running Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows
Server 2012, as well as recent versions of Linux (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3 and Ubuntu
12.04 and 14.04 and RedHat Enterprise Linux 7).
Requirements
HP ProLiant Gen9 servers support both UEFI Boot Mode (default) and Legacy BIOS Boot Mode. This
is configured via the Boot Mode setting in HP UEFI System Utilities. When the servers are configured
for UEFI Boot Mode, observe the following requirements:

If Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 is used in UEFI Boot Mode, UEFI Optimized Boot must be disabled
(this option is enabled by default).

When booting VMware ESX in UEFI Boot Mode, UEFI Optimized Boot must be enabled.

Only HP Smart Array controllers on the list of supported server options should be used. Other HP
Smart Array controllers are not supported and might not function properly in this server. HP
recommends that HP Smart Array controllers be updated to the latest version of firmware before
they are used in the server. Before installing the operating system, use the latest HP Service Pack
for ProLiant in Offline mode to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Install only supported
HP Smart Array controllers updated using the latest firmware. Supported controllers not using the
proper firmware display as an unknown device in the system configuration.

Only networking devices on the list of supported server options should be used. Unsupported
networking devices might not function properly in this server. HP recommends that networking
devices be updated to the latest version of firmware before they are used in the server. Before
installing the operating system, use the latest HP Service Pack for ProLiant in Offline mode to
upgrade the firmware to the latest version.

When the server is configured for UEFI Boot Mode, PXE servers must be configured with a UEFI
boot image. For x64 EFI machines, the DHCP server also needs to be configured to support x64
EFI DHCP boot requests. For more information, see the UEFI Information Library http://
www.hp.com/go/ProLiantUEFI/docs.

When the server boots in UEFI Boot Mode, it does not boot media with a legacy OS installation.
This includes DOS targets and Windows or Linux systems installed in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode.
The reverse is also true for servers that boot in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode.

HP Dynamic Smart Array B140i support is only available in UEFI Boot Mode. It cannot be enabled
in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode.

If the default boot mode settings are different than the user configured settings, the system might
not boot the OS installation if the defaults are restored. To avoid this issue, create and save
user-defined default settings in the System Utilities to override the system default settings. For more
information, see the UEFI Information Library http://www.hp.com/go/ProLiantUEFI/docs.

Secure Boot ensures that only firmware components, UEFI applications, and operating system
bootloaders that have appropriate digital signatures and that have been verified authentic can
execute during the boot process. Each component launched during the boot process is digitally
signed and that signature is validated against a set of trusted certificates embedded in the UEFI
BIOS. Secure Boot does not require any special hardware, such as a Trusted Platform Module,
to function. Secure Boot can only be enabled in UEFI Boot Mode. For more information, see the
HP UEFI System Utilities User Guide for HP ProLiant Gen9 Servers.
