Updating Blade Element Firmware in an NS2400/T/ST,
NS2300, NS2200/T/ST, or NS2100 Server
This procedure describes how to update the firmware in an NS2400/NS2400T/NS2400ST,
NS2300, NS2200/ NS2200T/NS2200ST, or NS2100 server one blade element at a time while
the system remains online.
The Halted State Services (HSS) firmware files required for NS2400/NS2400T/NS2400ST,
NS2300, NS2200/NS2200T/NS2200ST, or NS2100 processor blades to boot are stored on
and accessed from either the two NonStop systems consoles or two designated CLuster I/O Modules
(CLIMs) configured to provide BOOTP and DHCP services on the dedicated service LAN.
To update the firmware in a single blade element after replacing it, see Replacing an NS2x00
Series Blade Element FRU or Fan or Servicing Memory
.
Refer to NonStop Firmware Matrices for updating System Firmware and other firmware.
CAUTION:

A processor is offline while you update its firmware. The impact of taking a processor offline
on system processes and applications depends upon how these system processes and
applications are configured. If the configuration is not fault tolerant, then application outages
and loss of system resources can occur.

HP authorized service providers must always update the NonStop Installed Database (NSID)
when they replace or install a FRU in a customer system.
The procedure for updating HSS firmware for NS2400/NS2400T/NS2400ST, NS2300,
NS2200/NS2200T/NS2200ST, or NS2100 servers involves the following steps:

Updated HSS firmware files for NS2400/NS2400T/NS2400ST, NS2300,
NS2200/NS2200T/NS2200ST, and NS2100 servers are delivered on the NonStop System
Console Installer DVD and downloaded onto the system consoles, as described in the NonStop
System Console Installer Guide
.

The OSM Low-Level Link is then used to create an HSS file for each
NS2400/NS2400T/NS2400ST, NS2300, NS2200/NS2200T/NS2200ST, or NS2100
server on the dedicated service LAN. The Update HSS action in the Low-Level Link allows you
to compare the currently running HSS version for all processors in the system against HSS
versions available on the system console, then copy and rename the firmware files to the
appropriate location on either the system consoles or designated CLIMs, and (optionally)
update the currently running HSS, if needed. As a final step in the action, OSM offers to reset
the processor blade to start running the new HSS firmware. If you choose not to, the processor
will not start running the new firmware until it is reset.
The Update HSS action is available before and after system discovery:

Before system discovery, click Update HSS on the toolbar or select Update HSS from the
Tools menu.

After system discovery, select Update HSS from the Tools menu.
For more information on performing this action, see the OSM Low-Level Link online help.
Related Information
HSS files, as well as the BOOTP and DHCP services required for NS2400/NS2400T/NS2400ST,
NS2300, NS2200/NS2200T/NS2200ST, or NS2100 servers to access those files, are configured
by your service provider during system installation. If you are unsure of the location or status of
those services, see Locating and Troubleshooting DHCP, TFTP, and DNS Services on the NonStop
